Panaji: Nearly 7,000 commercial establishments within the jurisdiction of Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) may soon be checked for compliance with fire safety norms.

An official of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said they will soon start with the inspection of the commercial establishments to ensure that they comply with all the fire safety norms. “We will start with the inspections after following the due process,” the official said.

The CCP had recently written to the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services to inspect all the commercial establishments within its jurisdiction and furnish a list of all such establishments that did not possess the valid no-objection certificate (NOC) issued by the fire services. The CCP had also sought a list of business concerns that were not in compliance with the fire safety norms prescribed by the fire services.

“In view of the recent tragic fire incident at Arpora, and with a view to ensuring strict adherence to fire safety norms and statutory compliance, it is imperative that all establishments within the jurisdiction of CCP obtain a valid No Objection Certificate from your office (Fire NOC) and are in compliance with fire safety norms prescribed by your office,” CCP said in its letter to the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services.

Speaking to The Navhind Times, a CCP official said that there are nearly 7,000 commercial establishments within its jurisdiction that have been issued trade licence. The establishments include small shops, supermarkets, restaurants, among others.

“We have submitted the list of all commercial establishments that are operating within the CCP jurisdiction. The DFES has been asked to inspect all the establishments that do not have valid Fire NOCs. We want all the establishments to comply with the norms,” the CCP official said.
