Goa water shortage linked to ageing pipelines and supply gaps

Minister for Drinking Water Subhash Phal Dessai Wednesday said that the issue of water shortage in most parts of Goa will be resolved in the next

four months.

Briefing media after a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the minister said that currently 26% of Goa’s households receive water supply for 24 hours a day.

“Those receiving water supply for 24×7 never speak about it, while those who get inadequate supply raise concern publicly, so a perception is created that there is shortage of water everywhere, which is not the case,” he said.

“By April this year, another 100 MLD (million litres per day) water treatment plant will be ready, which will help us resolve the water supply issue marginally in many parts of the state,” Phal

Dessai said.

The minister said the cost of treating water is Rs 31 per unit, which is borne by the state government, and the department charges consumers Rs 4.10 per unit.

He said that 50% of the water supply pipelines in the state are over 40 years old and they break down with an increase in water pressure.

The minister appealed to the people to make wise use of potable water and said the collective efforts of the government and the public will help reduce wastage of water in a big way.

In a reply tabled in the state legislative assembly recently, the minister had said that it will take at least five to seven years to change the entire old water supply pipelines in the state.
