Panel under ‘Ami Panjekar’, a citizen-backed initiative supported by Utpal Parrikar, along with former city mayors, Surendra Furtado and Vaidehi Naik, will contest the forthcoming election to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), to be held on March 11.
Former city councillor Menino da Cruz and Dattaprasad Naik are also supporting the panel.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday, Parrikar said that the names of the candidates in the panel have been kept confidential and would be strategically revealed only after the candidates file their nomination papers. “We don’t want to take any risk by announcing these candidates beforehand, as they could face pressure to give up their candidature,” he said.
“Leaders from various political parties are with the Ami Panjekar panel, which is an apolitical group, and can contribute to the capital city’s progress,” Parrikar said. Speaking further, Parrikar said that the panel will contest the CCP polls in most of the 30 wards, and could support some candidates with different ideologies so as to defeat candidates from the Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate panel.
