Ponda

A resident of Shiroda in Ponda was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.61 lakh by an online fraudster who posed as a Facebook friend and promised to send a birthday parcel containing gold, cash and other items.

Police said the accused told the complainant that a parcel from the UK containing cash, a mobile phone, perfume, a wristwatch, a gold chain and a gold bracelet had been sent to his address in Goa. The accused also said that 40 per cent of the cash in the parcel
was to be donated to an orphanage.

The accused later informed the complainant that the parcel was held up in Delhi for customs clearance and asked him to make payments to release it. Believing the claim, the complainant transferred
Rs 1.61 lakh in multiple transactions through GPay using the UPI IDs of his wife and daughter provided by the accused.

However, the parcel was not delivered and the amount was
not returned.

Ponda police have registered a case under Sections 319(2) and 318(4) of the BNS. PSI Bansal Naik is investigating the case.
