Panaji: The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding growing public opposition to the “mandatory” installation of smart electricity meters in the state.

Initiating proceedings after local news coverage, the Commission observed that the issue prima facie raises human rights concerns. Consequently, the GHRC issued a notice to the Chief Electrical Engineer, seeking a detailed report and a formal reply.

The matter is scheduled for a hearing on June 2 at 10.30 am, as per an order dated May 11. The electricity department is directed to appear in person or through an authorised representative to submit its response. The order was passed by Acting Chairperson and Member Desmond D’Costa and Member Pramod V Kamat.

This intervention follows mounting apprehensions from consumers and civil society groups regarding privacy, billing transparency and the financial burden of compulsory meter installation.
