Residents of Siolim gathered outside the local electricity department office late on Sunday night, protesting frequent power outages and voltage fluctuations that they said have disrupted daily life in the area for the past three months.
The residents alleged that despite irregular electricity supply, they continue to receive power bills of up to Rs 4,000 for domestic connections and are also being charged penalties.
“We are constantly suffering due to power cuts and low voltage. Children, youth and senior citizens have been forced to gather here past midnight to raise this issue,” a resident said during the protest.
According to locals, repeated power interruptions are often attributed to technical faults. However, residents questioned why the issue continues even after electricity cables in the area were laid underground.
The protesters said the matter has already been brought to the attention of the local MLA, but no permanent solution has been found so far.
Residents further claimed that voltage levels in the area had dropped to around 179 volts in recent days, causing damage to household appliances. One resident alleged that two television sets in his home were damaged over the past two days due to sudden voltage fluctuations.
Families with young children said the prolonged outages, especially at night, have made life difficult, with many unable to sleep because of the heat.
The residents have demanded immediate intervention by the electricity department to restore stable and uninterrupted power supply in the area and resolve the recurring issue without further delay.
