Margao: Goa Forward Party (GFP) president and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has appealed to the Goan diaspora in the United Kingdom to help build public opinion for Opposition unity ahead of the Goa Assembly elections, saying their support in shaping public opinion would be more valuable than financial contributions.
Currently on a visit to the UK, Sardesai has been meeting members of the Goan community to discuss their concerns about Goa, the upcoming elections and the need for Opposition unity to defeat the BJP.
“We don’t want financial support from you in London. We need your love, support and your proactive role, especially on social media, as influencers to create public opinion and promote togetherness to bring about change,” said Sardesai.
He said that GFP is a small party and that its decisions are made in Goa, not in Delhi. He also reiterated his stand on dual citizenship.
“There is legal basis for dual citizenship, as in Italy. There is no loss to the government of India in allowing dual citizenship. We got the opportunity for Portuguese citizenship because of our history,” said Sardesai.
During his visit, Sardesai interacted with members of the Goan community at Hounslow House and met councillors Allister De Sa, Vilber D’Costa, Salvador Pereira and Jack Emsley, Leader of the Conservative Party in the London Borough of Hounslow.
“It is a proud moment to see Goans making their mark in public life across the UK. Our diaspora continues to excel globally,” he said.
Sardesai also met the Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow, Councillor Ranjit Gill, Leader of the Labour Party in Hounslow, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, and Labour Councillor Pamila Rodrigues.
