Peter Farrelly’s biodrama / Play Rocky, with Anthony Ippolito as Sylvester Stallone, Chris Rock’s film industry tale Misty Green, with the director also starring alongside Rosalind Eliazar, and Yeon Sang-ho’s Korean sci-fi mystery Paradise Lost, with Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyeon-Seong, are among 58 newly announced galas and special presentations that will screen at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

TIFF’s closing night gala, on September 19, will be the world premiere of Yan Lanouette Turgeon’s Villeneuve: The Rise of A Legend, a biographical sports drama about the early years of Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve.  The festival, which this year runs September 10-20, unveiled a slate of gala and special presentation features coming from nearly 30 countries.  In addition to the Farrelly, Rock and Yeon films, the slate’s 28 world premieres include John Madden’s British drama Onwards And Sideways, with Rhys Ifans and Laura Linney, Wayne Wang’s Tokyo-set US film Diary Of A Mad Old Man, with Fan Bingbing, and US true crime story Evil Genius.

Other films making their global debuts include Anton Corbijn’s A Talent
For Murder, Rebel Wilson’s Girl Group, Joss Crowley’s Pretenders, Trudie Styler’s Up Against It, Jonathan Schey’s Everybody Wants To F*** Me, Richie Mehta’s Phoolan and Niki Byrne’s The Julia Set.

International premieres include Nguyen Phan Quang Binh’s Spirit Guardians: The Last Secret ff The First Emperor and Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut.

Among the slate’s North American premieres are Reed Van Dyk’s Atonement, Florian Zeller’s Bunker, Gael García Bernal’s Hombre Al Agua, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Look Back and several films that debuted in Cannes including Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden, Pedro Almodovar’s Bitter Christmas, Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri’s Clarissa, Lukas Dhont’s Coward and Ira Sachs’ The Man I Love.

High-profile films that are due to receive their Canadian premieres (implying that they are likely to bow first at Telluride) include Andrew Haigh’s A Long Winter, Simon Stone’s Elsinore and Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care.

Previously announced as TIFF galas have been Sian Heder’s opening night film Being Heumann, Susanna White’s Prima Facie and Hur Jin-ho’s The Assassin.

Previously announced special presentations have included Alpha Gang from David and Nathan Zellner, Glaxo from Benjamín Naishtat, The Housewife from Ben Shirinian, Love Of Your Life from Rachel Morrison and Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother from Bassam Tariq.
