Sankhali: The Rs 150-crore Amthane-Cunchelim 150 MLD Raw Water Conveyance Scheme project will strengthen the state’s water infrastructure and cater to future population growth and development, said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Sawant will inaugurate the project on Tuesday.
“The scheme will reduce disruptions to raw water supply caused by maintenance, breaches, emergency repairs and mechanical failures affecting the open canal of the Tillari Irrigation Project,” said Sawant.
The project will supply raw water to the Assonora, Pilerne, Porvorim and Assagao water treatment plants.
Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar said the government had established the scheme to address disruptions to the existing raw water supply system.
Under the project, a pumping station has been constructed at the Amthane Dam. It will pump 150 MLD of raw water daily into the Left Main Canal. The pumping station has four vertical turbine pumps, each with a capacity of 75 MLD. Two pumps will operate at a time, while two will remain on standby to ensure continuity during maintenance or technical failures.
An arrangement has also been made to draw water from the Sal River into the Amthane reservoir when required to maintain adequate storage.
A 1,200 mm and 1,000 mm-diameter ductile iron pipeline has been laid between Amthane and Cunchelim. Under the scheme, 100 MLD of raw water will be supplied to the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, 30 MLD to Pilerne, 15 MLD to Porvorim and 5 MLD to Assagao.
The Assonora plant will receive water through gravity flow, while the existing system will carry water to the Pilerne and Porvorim plants. A separate pumping arrangement has been established at the Cunchelim Pump House to supply water to the Assagao plant.
The project was executed in three phases. The first and second phases were completed by M/s Bagkiya Construction Pvt Ltd, while the third phase was executed by M/s South East Constructions Company Pvt Ltd.
