A man was stabbed to death while he was trying to protect a 26-year-old woman from a group of alleged molesters in a park in northwest Delhi’s Bharat Nagar on Wednesday, police said.

They said a juvenile has been apprehended in the matter while efforts are under way to identify and arrest the others involved. A case of murder has also been registered.

The woman also suffered serious knife injuries in the attack and was admitted to a hospital, they said.

According to preliminary information, four to five youths allegedly approached the man and the woman while they were sitting in the park. The assailants allegedly began molesting the woman, and when the man objected, they attacked both of them with knives before fleeing the spot.

The deceased was identified as Sunil, a native of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. The woman, Devki, a resident of Jahangirpuri, was referred to a higher medical centre after doctors suspected a possible lung injury.

According to the police, a PCR call regarding a stabbing incident at Khimman Singh Park in Ashok Vihar was received at around 3.33 pm.

Police personnel rushed to the spot and found that Devki, a married woman, and Sunil had been attacked. The two were shifted to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors declared Sunil brought dead.

In her statement to police, Devki said that four to five unidentified persons approached them while they were in the park. An altercation reportedly broke out over some issue, following which one of the assailants attacked both of them with a knife before all the accused fled the spot.

Police sources said that the assailants allegedly molested the woman and attacked the duo after the man objected. However, police said the exact sequence of events and motive behind the assault were still being verified as part of the investigation.

A senior doctor at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital said that both victims were brought with multiple stab injuries.

“The man had sustained four stab wounds and was declared brought dead. The woman had received two stab injuries and was referred to a higher centre for advanced treatment due to a possible lung injury,” the doctor said.

According to the doctor, Sunil suffered one stab injury on the face, two on the chest and another near the waist.

“The woman had one stab injury on the upper back and another on the lower back. There are possibilities that she sustained a lung injury because of the stab wounds, so she was immediately referred to a higher centre for advanced treatment,” the doctor added.

Police said a forensic team was called to collect evidence from the spot. Investigators are scanning CCTV camera footage from the surrounding areas to identify the attackers and reconstruct the sequence of events. The other accused are absconding and multiple police teams have been constituted to trace and apprehend them, police said.

A case is being registered and further investigation into the matter is under way.

Meanwhile, a security guard of the park said he rushed to the victims after hearing the woman’s cries for help.
