Police here on Monday arrested a person allegedly posing as an intelligence officer and duping several Army jawans in the name of getting them loans.
The accused, identified as Sagar Guleria (26), a resident of Jalandhar (Punjab), has cases reported against him in several states, the police said.
His arrest was followed by a complaint from the office of the Army Intelligence, which informed the police that a person was roaming around the Ratanada area for the past some days posing as a captain in Army Intelligence.
According to the information, it was suspected that Guleria was searching for targets in the Army area for duping them.
On receiving the information, the police rolled out a team and initiated a search operation for identification of the suspect in the designated area, said an officer.
Finally, the accused
was found in uniform which he had put on in a restaurant in the area on Monday morning.
On interrogation, it was found that he had allegedly swindled many Army jawans in the name of getting them loans. The total amount is allegedly said to be in crores, said an officer, adding that many women also fell victim to his “cheating” in the name of granting loans.
The officer said that the accused would always put on an Army uniform while in the field. He would search for his target and influence them with his position.
So far, seven complaints of cheating and eight complaints of cyber crimes have been found to be registered in Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal, said the officer.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that Guleria earlier worked as a clerk with the Army. He disappeared and was declared an absconder in 2024.
He was once caught by the Haryana police last year in a similar case but managed to jump bail. He continued to target people in other districts.
