Panaji: Goa recorded 76 accidents involving rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike vehicles between 2021 and July 31, 2026, claiming 38 lives and leaving 65 persons injured, according to detailed accident-wise information tabled in the Legislative Assembly.
The year-wise data shows that nine accidents were recorded in 2021, causing nine injuries and three deaths. In 2022, there were two accidents, one injury and one death. The number rose to 14 accidents in 2023, with six persons injured and 10 killed.
In 2024, there were 18 accidents, resulting in 17 injuries and nine deaths. In 2025, the number of accidents reached 20, the highest for any year in the period, with 22 persons injured and seven killed. Till July 31, 2026, another 13 accidents had been recorded, with 10 injured and eight killed.
Alcohol consumption by the driver/rider was recorded during investigation in four cases, including incidents in 2023 and 2026.
Bardez recorded the highest number of accidents at 37, followed by Tiswadi with 13, Mormugao 11 and Salcete six. Pernem recorded three, while Canacona and Dharbandora had two each, and Ponda and Quepem one each. Among police stations, Anjuna accounted for 15 cases, followed by Calangute with 12 and Verna with eight.
The figures come after the state transport authority’s July 22, 2026 decision not to issue any new rent-a-cab permits, covering all vehicles, including Thar vehicles.
