A grand theatrical production, ‘Shiv Shahi’, was staged in Porvorim as a tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Thousands gathered at the Housing Board Ground to watch the play, which brought the 17th century to life and celebrated Shivaji Maharaj’s bravery and legacy.

The play was written, produced, and directed by Mahendra Mahadik and featured over 150 artists, real horses, bullock carts, a golden plough, and an 18-foot ship named Konkani. The production was a visual spectacle, with a massive revolving stage, a five-floor set with a rotating tower, and a 12-foot idol of Goddess Bhavani. A highlight was the intense battle scene between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan.

For Goa, the play had special meaning as Shivaji Maharaj had fought against the Adil Shahs and stood for cultural and religious freedom. The first written records of his life were also documented in Goa by Portuguese traveller Cosme De Guarda.

The event was supported by the Department of Tourism. Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte said, “Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy continues to inspire. Shiv Shahi honours his bravery while highlighting Goa’s history.”

Rajya Sabha Member Sadanand Shet Tanawade called it a “magnificent tribute”, while Tourism Director Kedar Naik and GTDC Managing Director Kuldeep Arolkar spoke about the importance of preserving Goa’s heritage.
