Panaji : Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said that Goa’s River Navigation Department remains “chronically underdeveloped and under-visioned” despite the state’s 250-km network of rivers and estuaries.
Speaking during the Assembly discussion on demand for grants to the River Navigation Department, Alemao said the once-iconic ferry system is now outdated and neglected. “Ferry ramps are broken, pontoons rusted, crew often irregular, and basic amenities for commuters like shade, toilets, drinking water, and night lighting are missing,” said Alemao.
He said that the safety of passengers, especially students, senior citizens, and tourists, is often compromised. “There is still no master plan for inland water transport, despite its potential to ease road congestion, reduce emissions, and connect hinterland hubs,” he said.
Alemao demanded that the government table a White Paper on river navigation in Goa, detailing its history, current status, and a 10-year action plan.
“Inland waterways are not just transport corridors, they are part of Goa’s ecological soul and cultural memory.
A people-centric, eco-sensitive river navigation policy can help build cleaner, quieter, safer mobility,” he said
