Change often begins with a vision and a determination to make a difference. In Goa, one of the NGOs which have been working to effect change in the state is the Padmini Foundation.
One of the foundation’s efforts has been in raising awareness about breast cancer. This condition, among the leading causes of mortality for women globally, often remains undetected in its early stages due to limited access to information and lingering societal stigma. According to a press note, the foundation has held over 100 programmes on breast and ovarian cancer awareness, and engaged more than 10,000 women. Through various campaigns, women are educated about the importance of early detection, regular screenings, and self-examinations. These programmes also create safe spaces for women to openly discuss health concerns.
The foundation also organises medical camps and first responder training sessions. These camps provide basic health check-ups, offer preventive care, and teach participants how to handle emergencies. The inclusion of training for first responders has been particularly impactful, equipping individuals with the skills to act during critical moments and strengthening the community’s overall preparedness.
Recognising the power of knowledge to shape futures, the foundation also celebrates academic excellence through events that honour students who have achieved exceptional results in their exams. These celebrations are paired with career guidance and leadership training.
The foundation also works towards economic empowerment, particularly for women. Training sessions, such as teaching embroidery techniques, have equipped women with practical skills that can be turned into sustainable sources of income. These initiatives go beyond technical training by connecting participants with mentors—seasoned professionals who guide them through the nuances of managing and expanding small
businesses.
Grassroots entrepreneurship is further supported through programmes that focus on providing resources and market access to local business owners and farmers. One such initiative has been the promotion of sustainable farming practices, including the cultivation of medicinal plants. These efforts not only preserve traditional agricultural knowledge but also create new economic opportunities by connecting farmers with broader markets. The foundation’s emphasis on creating local e-bazaars and platforms for small entrepreneurs has fostered a thriving ecosystem, ensuring that economic growth benefits the community as a whole.
Cultural preservation has also been a priority. Goa’s rich traditions and vibrant heritage are celebrated through events and workshops that aim to keep cultural practices alive. Programmes are also held to honouring elders within the community. These events also provide a space for intergenerational bonding.
Partnerships with local panchayats, resource persons, and community leaders have been integral to the success of the foundation’s programmes.
