Panaji: Goa’s veteran freedom fighter, Libia Lobo Sardesai, who has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, on Sunday said that “such moments are rare in one’s life, and the award came as a big surprise”. Lobo said that she had never expected or aspired for it.
Sharing a message for the public, the 100-year-old said her life is her message and appealed to the youth to work for the country. She quoted Swami Vivekananda’s words, “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached,” and said she hoped the recognition would set an example and inspire others.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, visited Lobo to offer his congratulations.
“At 100 years, Sardesai stands as a symbol of courage and determination, having played a pivotal role in Goa’s Liberation movement,” said Sawant, congratulating her on receiving the recognition and praising her lifelong commitment to Goa’s progress and empowerment.
In 1955, Sardesai made history by establishing the underground radio station VozDa Liberdade (Voice of Freedom), which was instrumental in spreading the message of resistance during Portuguese rule.
She also contributed to the freedom movement by assisting the Indian Army in setting up transmission centres. After Liberation, she became the first female lawyer to practice in Goa’s courts.
