The nonprofit dedicated to fostering a love of reading among children in Goa is expanding its impact with the opening of Jumble Laya, a permanent thrift store and secondhand bookstore, at Neura

Originally starting as a children’s library 20 years ago, Bookworm has evolved into so much more with an array of literacy outreach programmes. It has also expanded to branches in Saligao, Aldona, and a newly opened location in Sarawali in South Goa.
Now, it has just begun Jumble Laya, a permanent thrift store and secondhand bookstore, which opened its doors on April 25 at Neura.
The thrift store is a step up from their annual jumble sale which used to previously be organised either in Campal or elsewhere in Panaji.
“With the permanent thrift store, we hope to sustain funding for our traveling library, mobile outreach, and the libraries we maintain in care homes and hospitals. We’re staying nonprofit, but we needed a more stable way to continue our work beyond just those two days a year,” says team member Sinead Vaz.
The library’s mobile outreach programme is designed to bring library services directly to communities that do not have access to established library spaces, such as those in Mala or Saligao. Many children in these areas face transportation challenges, and their parents often work full-time, making it difficult for them to visit a library. The mobile outreach program brings curated book selections directly to these communities. In some cases, activities take place in a designated room or space within the community; in others, the team sets up outdoors for two to three hours in the afternoon. The program includes book borrowing and lending, read-aloud sessions, engaging activities, and more. The store’s support will specifically fund transportation and logistical needs essential for the smooth operation of the outreach efforts.
While the secondhand bookstore is dedicated solely to books, the Jumble Laya thrift store will feature a variety of items donated by the community. These may include clothes, household items, kitchenware, art pieces, and other goods.
All items at the thrift store are donation-based. Each item is sorted, categorized, and thoroughly checked to ensure it meets quality standards before being put up for sale.
“By supporting Jumble Laya, the community is directly contributing to a cause that provides children with access to books, activities, and education that they might otherwise miss,” says Vaz.”It’s not just about shopping — it’s about giving back.”
People are encouraged to get involved through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word. Applications for volunteers and interns are available on their website.
