Konkani writer and Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo’s novel, ‘Jeev Diu Kai Chya Marun’ which is now translated into Hindi by Ramita Gurav titled, ‘Jaan Di Jayein Ya Chai Ho Jaayein…’, will be launched on April 29, 5 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Sanskruti Bhavan, Panaji.
The book, published by Vaani Prakashan Group, will be launched by writer, translator and critic, professor Harish Trivedi along with the special guest of the programme, administrator of St Xavier’s College Mapusa, Fr. Antonio Salema.
The book is a story of self-discovery of a teenager called Vipin Porob, who has spent his childhood in a loveless and lonely atmosphere with closed windows and locked doors. However, his interaction with Martin sir helps him to believe in human relationships. He also introduces him to the world of books and they become his best friends along with Fatima and Chitra as they make him realise the importance of love and friendship. But when faced with complexities of life Vipin often finds himself in a dilemma; uncertain about which path to choose.
The novel also depicts the changing Goan social -cultural scenario, while exploring the emotional and existential questions faced by the protagonist.
This is the fourth translation of the novel. It was previously translated into Marathi by Shaila Mauzo titled ‘Jeev Dyava Ki Chaha Ghyava’, into Kannada by Kishoo Barkur titled ‘Jeeva Kodale Chaha Kudiyale’, and recently into English by Jerry Pinto titled ‘Boy Unloved.’ Gurav is an associate professor at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, where she has been teaching Hindi for nearly 30 years now. Recently, she translated a collection of short stories of Mauzo, in Hindi, titled, ‘Mannat’ published by Vani Prakashan and prior to that ‘Swapna Premi,’ published by RajKamal Prakashan, New Delhi. She has also done translations of Konkani poems and Marathi short stories in Hindi.
