TIATR REVIEW JP Pereira

‘Nangor’ (anchor), the new tiatr written and directed by Ben Evangelisto recounts the tale of a fisherman, Jose, who has worked hard to upkeep his family through his
traditional occupation

His son Franky is the local sarpanch and is married to Sheena a lady with plenty of ego. Their son, Schubert, is unfortunately a drug addict but loves Jose. Franky is corrupt, pampers all who bribe him and when the father objects, orders him to stop his fishing. The story also features Jennifer who is studying dentistry and who Schubert is in love with. Other characters include Arnaldo who is another fisherman, Anita, the tough panch who tries to fight illegalities and Benedito, the deputy sarpanch who is just as corrupt as his boss. When Savio returns from London to help fight against the evil, a tussle begins. Tradition vies against modernism to save the beautiful land of Goa while the corrupt try to amass wealth.

The script mentions many evils that are prevalent in Goa. The tiatr has a good cast, a fine band that backs many nice songs, and plenty of decent comedy. The special scenes are executed well and the drone sequence is fun to watch. The main set by Anthony de Ambajim looks good. Dinesh provides the light effects. The cast has Normandez who is simply wonderful as the suffering fisherman. Arnaldo plays his friend, who is very understanding and helpful. Vilban is Franky, (replacing Frankie in this show) crooked, tough and heartless, and at times, amusing. Sheena is aptly cast as his egoistic wife, stylish and quite proud of herself. Anyel plays Schubert, the son who has many problems, Jennifer is the girl he loves and Anil is Savio, who has returned from London. Sandra, Urbano, Damien, Avers, Michael, Francisco, Adilas, and others play a variety of characters. Anita is the tough lady panch, smart and knowledgeable while Ben is the corrupt deputy. Ambe is busy with filming various incidents and Frederic is the handyman who teams with all. The four provide good humour. Fisherman Pele, who is quite popular on social media, makes a guest appearance.

The band consists of Senon (trumpet), Edrol (trumpet), Macmilan (drums), Claron (keyboard), and Trian (bass). There is good music to back the various songs. Sheena and Jennifer render the opening song and return for duets later. There are a variety of good songs from Michael, Francisco, Anil, Marcus, Avers, and the little Nathan Xavier. Solos by Avers Pereira and Jose Mascarenhas and a duet by Jose with Avyanna Xavier, stand out.
