Captain Schubert Jacinto Pires recently released his fourth book, ‘The Pursuit of Perfektion’ in which he has shared the life lessons that the sea has taught him.
“The sea teaches you a lot. It reveals your personality and it does not judge whether you’re good or bad,” says Captain Pires who has over 25 years of experience as a sailor.
While his passion for sailing always comes first, writing is a second close. In fact, it was during his first ship voyage as captain that he first began writing books, a dream that had been on his mind for awhile. His first book, ‘I’ll live when I’m alive…I’ll sleep when I’m dead’ came out in 2012, followed by a book in the lighter tone called ‘Thou shall not get married’. His third book was a guide book for young sailors called ‘Sailor Success’.
The latest book is titled ‘The Pursuit of Perfektion’. “The ‘K’ in my Perfection is misspelt on purpose to denote that we will never be 100% perfect in life. It is inspired from the Will Smith’s film ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ where happiness is misspelt,” he says. Elaborating on this Captain Pires states people usually have a vision of the perfect version of themselves. “And as you aim to get closer to your own version of perfect, in whichever aspect you want to improve, you realise that the target of perfection keeps moving further up,” he says.
Even so, he believes that while must keep fine tuning oneself, the idea is to be better today than yesterday. “You will never reach 100% perfection. You can ask any person who’s at the top level of their profession, they will still be improving upon themselves,” he says.
With a foreword by Captain K.V Vivekanand, the book has chapters with step by step guidance on how people can keep improving upon themselves.
“Even after people have read the book, they can go back and re-read it whenever they’re feeling de-motivated. The book will help you get back on track,” he says.
Captain Pires plans to write fiction later in life.
