Joaquim Carvalho nets a hattrick in their 7-0 win
Mapusa : Chapora Yuvak Sangh produced a ruthless performance to dismantle Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 7-0 in a chaotic GFA First Division League Play-Off at Duler Stadium on Sunday, in a match that ended prematurely with Cavelossim reduced to six men.
Chapora wasted no time asserting their dominance, earning a penalty in the 2nd minute after Sankalp Kankonkar was brought down in the box. Joaquim Carvalho stepped up and calmly slotted home the opener.
Rohan Pednekar doubled the lead in the 16th minute, tapping in a low cross. Chapora continued their attacking onslaught, and in the 33rd minute were awarded a second penalty. Carvalho once again converted, giving his side a 3-0 advantage.
Cavelossim’s misery worsened five minutes later when Aryan Carvalho was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle, leaving them a man down. Just before the break, Kankonkar struck twice, scoring in the 45th and 45+3rd minutes to hand Chapora a 5-0 lead.
The second half picked up where the first left off. Aryan Vaigankar made it 6-0 in the 49th minute with a powerful finish. Things spiraled further for Cavelossim when Dravid Fernandes received his second yellow card for a foul inside the box, conceding another penalty and reducing his side to nine men. Carvalho completed his hat-trick from the spot to make it 7-0.
With no substitutions left, Cavelossim’s Velroy Fernandes limped off with a hamstring injury, and soon after, captain Delzan Passanha exited with a calf strain, leaving them with just seven on the pitch. The final blow came in the 70th minute when goalkeeper Glen Fernandes dislocated his shoulder while attempting a save. Unable to continue and with Cavelossim down to six players, referee Tejas Nagvenkar called off the match, awarding Chapora the win.
St Anthony SC beat ten-man Candolim
Vagator: St Anthony Sports Club, Marna, Siolim ground out a narrow 1-0 win over Candolim Sports Club in a tense GFA First Division League Play-Off at the Vagator Ground on Sunday.
Candolim started the brighter of the two sides, controlling the midfield and pressing aggressively in search of an early breakthrough. However, their momentum took a major blow in the 16th minute when Aiyan Shaikh was shown a straight red card, reducing them to ten men.
St Anthony SC looked to make the most of the numerical advantage and piled on the pressure, but Candolim’s defence held firm in the first half, frustrating their opponents with some resolute defending.
After the restart, St Anthony came out with renewed intent and eventually broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. Nathan D’Souza latched onto a loose ball and rifled it home to give his side a vital lead.
Candolim threw bodies forward in the closing stages in search of an equalizer, but the Marna-based outfit held their nerve and kept their shape at the back to secure a hard-fought victory.
