Panaji woke up to an unusually cool morning on Monday as the minimum temperature dipped to 20.6°C, 2.4 degrees below the normal, marking the season’s lowest so far. Data from IMD’s Mormugao observatory showed a minimum temperature of 23°C, 1.2°C below normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this fall to northerly winds prevailing in the lower levels of the atmosphere over the state, which have led to a noticeable chill in the night air.
According to the IMD, no rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours. The maximum temperature in the capital stood at 32.6°C, which was 0.9°C below normal. The relative humidity was at 83%, slightly above the seasonal average.
Meteorologists said that the change in the wind pattern is typical for this time of year, as post-monsoon circulation shifts northwards.
“The northerly winds bring relatively cooler and drier air, reducing night temperatures, especially in inland regions,” said a senior IMD scientist.
The department’s seven-day outlook suggests shallow to moderate fog during morning hours for the next two days. The overall weather is expected to remain dry and stable.
While the mercury is expected to rise slightly later in the week, IMD forecasts “no large change” in
temperature trends for the next seven days. With the early signs of winter settling in, residents can look forward to pleasant evenings and misty mornings across the state.
