Pointing out that industrial and road accidents in the state are a cause for concern, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that job-oriented courses in local industrial training institutes (ITIs) and colleges will be made more safety oriented.
“Safety is essential to care for families of people who work in all sectors,” he said, adding that safety courses will open a new career path for Goan youth.
Sawant announced skill-on-wheels, a mobile training unit for which the sanctioned funds is Rs 2 crore.
“The on-the-go classroom will travel from Panaji city to rural areas. It will be equipped with tools, and technology to teach courses in occupational safety to youth,” he said at the inauguration of Goa’s first Occupational Safety and Health Expo & Summit 2025, organised by the inspectorate of factories & boilers.
Sawant said the Expo will improve awareness, knowledge and action on occupational safety.
“The event is a step in the right direction. The government is committed to creating a safe, healthy industrial environment by introducing new courses in safety,” he said.
He urged the youth to enroll for the boiler attendant course which has been relaunched by the inspectorate of factories & boilers. The course will enable youth to become boiler operators.
“All the ITIs have introduced new programmes in industrial safety, electrical safety, fire safety, mental health, among others. The ITIs have tie-ups with local pharma companies and industry associations to tailor courses aimed at creating job opportunities for youth in industry,” remarked
Sawant was speaking in the presence of Minister for Factories and Boilers Nilkanth Halarnkar, factories secretary Sanjit Rodrigues, chief inspector of factories & boilers Anant Pangam, and Navin Jaju, CEO, Vedanta, Goa.
The three-day expo ends on April 12, and has sessions on fire safety, best safety practices in metal and mining industry, OSH in the hospitality industry, emerging technologies in electrical safety, etc.
The exhibition showcases the latest technology, equipment and safety solutions.
Companies from the state as well as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana have set up stalls on various safety equipment, appliances, fire retardant clothing, etc.
