With the state government implementing the national education policy (NEP) for Class 10 from this academic year, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has announced the assessment pattern with the compensation scheme, applicable only for candidates with ‘needs improvement’ remarks.
“The compensation scheme shall be made applicable only for those candidates with remark ‘needs improvement’ provided the candidate passes the grade 10 examination after applying the scheme,” said the GBSHSE in a
circular issued.
Goa Board chairman Bhagirath Shetye said the scheme is aimed at promoting skill education.
In all, there are ten subjects for assessment – six scholastic (Language R1, Language R2, Language R3, Social Science, Science and Mathematics) and four skill-based (Interdisciplinary Area, Vocational (NSQF and others), Art Education and Physical Education).
As far as the criteria for applying the compensation scheme is concerned, students with grades H or I in one or two scholastic subjects shall have their grade upgraded in these subjects if they score a minimum of 65 per cent in two skill subjects and score a minimum of 50 per cent in the remaining two skill subjects.
Also, the sports merit marks (SMM) are applicable for students participating in sports events during the academic year 2025-2026 only.
“The compensation scheme allows for the upgradation of any two subjects from among the six scholastic subjects. Additionally, the SMM may be utilised to help them pass the examination.
The compensation scheme and SMM can be exercised simultaneously, but only if the candidate passes the examination,” the GBSHSE said.
With regard to the passing criteria, a candidate has to secure a minimum H grade in external theory examination and minimum H grade separately in the practical component and has to secure an overall grade from A-G in a subject after combining theory and internal assessment.
“There is no provision of condonation or grace marks,” the GBSHSE said.
Under the ATKT (allowed to keep term) policy, a candidate with remark ‘needs improvement’ in one or two scholastic subjects will be placed under ATKT.
“They will be allowed to keep terms and continue in Grade 11, and Grade 11 result will be declared only when the student passes Grade 10,” it said.
The GBSHSE said the candidates who are placed under ATKT or ‘needs improvement’ category will be allowed to answer the supplementary examination. Candidates who did not appear for the examination for various reasons will also be permitted to answer the supplementary examination.
“Candidates who desire to improve their performance under the ‘improvement scheme’ will be allowed to answer the supplementary examination,” it said.
