VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, in collaboration with the Directorate of Higher Education, Goa, organised a two-day national workshop on ‘Trending Technologies and Research Tools in Library & Information
Science’.
The workshop coordinator, Manasi Rege, provided an overview, followed by director of the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa, Bhushan Savoikar, who discussed the decline in student engagement with library resources and the role of technology in enhancing processes. The inaugural session concluded with a keynote address by Pralhad Jadhav on ‘Shaping the Future of the LIS Domain with Technology-Driven Information Retrieval’.
Pralhad Jadhav from Khaitan & Co. led the first session on ‘Innovative Resources for Research’, addressing data management challenges and introducing tools like Everything, Windows Gadgets, and Snipping Tool to improve research efficiency. In the second session, he explored Google and AI tools, highlighting Google Scholar, Google Drive, and Google Translate, as well as specialised tools like Google Custom Search Engine and Google Reverse Image Search. He also introduced Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and its five stages to enhance research capabilities.
Gopakumar V. from Kerala University presented the third session on ‘AI Tools for Research’ comparing ChatGPT to human learning and demonstrating its use for tasks like data management and Excel calculations. The fourth session, also led by Gopakumar V., focused on using AI tools for literature searches, reference management, and content creation.
Day 2 began with the fifth session by J. Shivarama
from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, who discussed ‘Innovative Technologies for Building Future Libraries’. In the sixth session, Dr. J. Shivarama explored “Internet of Things (IoT) and Emerging Technologies in Library Science,” introducing practical tools like LAMP stack, Lynx, and Drupal for library management and web design.
Satish Kanamaddi led the seventh session on ‘Research Platforms’, covering key tools like Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. In the eighth session, ‘Researcher ID: Manage and Enhance Research Validity’, Dr. Kanamaddi emphasised the importance of digital identifiers like ORCID for enhancing researcher credibility and recognition, highlighting the role of digital identity in India’s
academic landscape.
