Writer Govind Mishra emphasised the importance of context in literature during his address at a one-day national seminar titled ‘The Role of Context in Literature’.
The seminar was organised by Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with the Department of Hindi, Government College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, Khandola and was held at the college premises.
In his talk, Mishra discussed how the use of language evolved under the influence of different historical periods. He highlighted how literature not only reflects the socio-political and cultural aspects of its time but also serves as a medium to understand history through its narratives.
Advocate Uday Bhembre spoke about the emergence of the Konkani language and its literature, underlining the role of context in shaping Konkani
literary works. He also reflected on the struggle for Konkani’s revival in Goa and how its literature has captured the history and culture of Goans.
Principal and professor Purnakala Samant stated that literature has been a powerful tool for people to express their emotions and opinions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The seminar was structured into three sessions. The first session, ‘Creativity and Context’, was moderated by professor Vrushali Mandrekar, with research papers presented by
Jitendra Bhatia, Brijpal Singh Gahloth, and Manisha Gaude. The second session, ‘The Role of Context in Fiction’ was moderated by Namdev Tarachandani, with presentations by Jayashankar, Amrita Dingue, and Sapana Pelapkar. The third session, ‘The Role of Context in Poetry’ was moderated by Ajay Singh Chouhan, featuring research papers by Asha Gahloth, Mamata Verlekar, and Sneha Prabhu Mahambre.
