Raigad: Two passengers were killed on the spot and 38 others injured after a private luxury bus overturned on the Mumbai-Goa highway near Nagothane’s Sukli Ghat early Friday morning.
Among the injured, at least 10 are reported to be in critical condition. While the bus was travelling from Mumbai to Goa, the driver reportedly lost control due to over-speeding while negotiating a sharp turn in the ghat section.
The accident has sparked outrage among survivors, who alleged the tragedy was caused by the driver’s reckless behaviour rather than any technical fault. Passengers claimed the driver had been driving negligently since the start of the journey and ignored repeated objections from those on board.
Some passengers had even lodged an online complaint regarding the driver’s rash driving on RedBus portal while the vehicle was still in motion. However, the accident occurred before any action could be taken.
Local residents rushed to the scene following the crash to initiate rescue efforts. Nagothane police and emergency teams subsequently evacuated the trapped passengers. The injured were initially moved to a nearby hospital, while 9 to 10 critically injured victims were later shifted to a hospital in Kalamboli for advanced treatment.
