Stating that he intends to contest the upcoming state assembly elections, City Mayor Rohit Monserrate on Monday said that the final decision on his constituency would, however, rest with the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership.
Speaking to reporters, Monserrate said that his preference is to contest from the Taleigao assembly constituency. He said that he wishes to carry forward the political legacy of his late mother, who earlier represented the constituency. âI want to continue with the strong connect she had with people,â he said.
Monserrate also clarified that he is not very keen on contesting from the St Cruz constituency, while reiterating that he would abide by whatever decision the party takes regarding his candidature. He said that no discussions have been held till now with the party as regards his candidature.
The City Mayor also apologised to the city shopkeepers affected by the recent flooding, and announced that the road repairs and inspection work would begin from August 4.
The reopening of the BJP office in St Cruz village by Revenue Minister and Panaji BJP MLA Atanasio âBabushâ Monserrate has reportedly caused displeasure among some local BJP leaders, including St Cruz legislator, Rodolfo Fernandes, thus fuelling speculation over the partyâs electoral plans for the constituency.
