Panaji: The first phase of Census 2027, which involves House listing and Housing Census, will be carried out across Goa from April 16 to May 15, according to the Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation.

The exercise will involve collection of data on housing conditions, amenities and assets of households. Ahead of this, a self-enumeration facility will be available from April 1 to April 15, enabling the residents to submit details digitally before the field operations begin.

The census is being conducted under provisions of the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990, as amended. Authorities said the upcoming round will adopt digital methods, marking a shift from the paper-based enumeration.

The second phase, involving Population Enumeration, is scheduled for February 2027, with a revisional round to be held from March 1 to March 5, 2027. This phase will capture individual-level data covering demographic, socio-cultural, economic, migration and fertility aspects.

A notification issued by Director of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation Vijay Saxena states that census data is a vital source of information at the village and urban ward levels and plays a key role in policy formulation, governance and development planning. It is also used for delimitation and reservation of constituencies for Parliament, assembly, panchayats and local bodies.

The department has appealed to the public to extend full cooperation to the census officers and provide accurate information.

As per the legal provisions, citizens are required to answer questions truthfully and allow access to the enumerators. Violations such as refusal, obstruction or furnishing false information may invite penalties under the Act.

The department also said that confidentiality of data has been assured, with records not open to public inspection or use in legal proceedings.
