Govt mulls bus fare concession for women working in firms

Panaji : Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said  the state government will introduce new regulations for companies, including revision in the minimum wages in the private sector, adding  that the state government is mulling providing concessions in bus fare for women working in the sector.

“I was talking to the Labour Commissioner about the need to revise minimum wages in the private sector. We will revise the minimum wages in the next few days. Not only revision, but based on the experience and years of services there is a need for an increase in their salaries also,” Sawant said.

Payscales suggested by pay commissions are implemented in the government sector.  Similarly, in the private sector, after five years of service, salaries will have to be increased, the Chief Minister  said.

“We will come up with new rules regarding the same,” he  said, while speaking at the Mega Job Fair organised by the office of the Commissioner of Labour and Employment at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, St Cruz on Sunday.

Sawant said that more than 150 companies were participating in the job fair and more than 5,000 job opportunities were available. Additionally, more than 10,000 youth registered for the job fair.

“To create different opportunities for the  Goan youth, the government is collaborating with the private sector too. Without depending only on government jobs, the youth should explore the opportunities available in the private sector to start their career,”  he advised.

He urged the companies participating in the fair to guide and counsel the youth and provide them with available opportunities so that they get better opportunities in the future.

Sawant said the opportunities available in the state  are in the sectors of aviation, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, automobile, construction, infrastructure, information and technology, telecommunication, banking, financial services, education, electronics, e-commerce and many more.

“Most of the times, our background is in  arts, commerce and science streams. Many a time, there is a need for skilling. Hence the government has laid its stress on skilling. We have introduced short-term skilling courses through the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship,” he said, urging the youth to take up new opportunities for reskilling and upskilling themselves.

Sawant said the Labour Department has organised 12 job fairs and more than 2000 youth have been employed through these job fairs in the private sector till date.
