Alleging that Goa is facing an unprecedented breakdown of law and order, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said there is a collapse of governance and public trust, with the police reduced to a reactive and demoralised force.

“There is no preventive policing, no coordination, and no leadership. Police is only reactive, that is also ‘selectively reactive’. There is total absence of any preventive approach. The breakdown of policing even at the entry point of police stations is the worst measure of public disorder. Daily we can see, tourists are attacked, labourers are shot, activists are silenced,” said Alemao during a press briefing at the Congress House in the city on Friday.

He alleged that Goa has now become a hub for ‘criminal tourism’. “Just as Goa was once promoted for ‘medical’ or ‘spiritual’ tourism, it is now known for criminal tourism. Criminals from across India — and even abroad — are coming to Goa not for holiday but for hiding, hustling and laundering. Goa offers the ‘perfect package’ for criminal tourism,” he said.

“Goa is witnessing an unprecedented breakdown of law and order. What was once India’s most peaceful state has turned into a playground for criminals, gangs, and mafias,” Alemao said.

Reacting to state BJP president Damodar Naik’s claim blaming the Congress for rising crime in the state, GPCC president Amit Patkar said Naik “made irresponsible statements on law and order”.

“However, he accepts that the law and order has collapsed in the state,” said Patkar., adding, “He (Naik) has understood that BJP will lose the forthcoming elections, be it ZP or assembly polls.”
