Panaji: The state administration has identified 261 abandoned vehicles since 2022, of which 179 have been removed, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said.
Police officials said vehicles are often left parked in lots or on roads for days or months, denying space to other users and causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.
Referring to the steps taken, Sawant said the district administration, in coordination with the police, transport department and local bodies, has initiated identification of abandoned vehicles on public roads.
“Proclamation notices are being issued to the registered owners under Section 26 of the Indian Police Act, 1861. Further, if the owner fails to remove or
is not traceable, then a report is submitted by the police department to the District Magistrate for further needful action and proclamation orders were issued,” Sawant said.
He said the timeframe for removal is six months after issuance of notice where no claim is made.
In Margao, 32 vehicles were removed in 2022. In Vasco, 59 were removed in 2023. In April 2025, 55 were identified in Margao and the process is underway. In Vasco in 2025, 60 were identified and 49 removed. In Salcete, 31 were identified and 28 removed. In Ponda, 11 were removed, while in Fatorda 13 were identified and remain under notice period.
