Voters in Panaji will elect corporators for 30 wards as polling for the general election to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) will be held on March 11 from 8 am to 5 pm.
The State Election Commission has set up 48 polling stations across the jurisdiction of the CCP in the capital city. A total of 69 candidates are in the fray across the
30 wards.
A panel backed by local MLA and Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Aami Panjekar panel supported by Utpal Parrikar, have fielded candidates in all 30 wards. There will be a straight contest in 23 wards of
the corporation.
According to the State Election Commission, a total of 32,496 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the election to the Corporation of the City of Panaji, of which 15,225 are male and 17,271 are female electors.
The Monserrate-backed panel has dominated the CCP for two decades. This time, the Aami Panjekar panel has set out to give a tough fight to the Monserrate-BJP-backed panel.
Whether the voters of Panaji will again give a mandate to the Monserrate-backed panel or offer an opportunity to the Aami Panjekar panel to run the Corporation of the City of Panaji will be known on March 13,
counting day.
