Panaji: The Department of Post under the Union Ministry of Communication has made the knowledge of Konkani compulsory for the appointment of candidates applying for Gramin Dak Seva (GDS) posts in post offices in Goa.
A notification issued by the department stated that the candidates must have studied Konkani or Marathi at the 10th standard level.
However, the candidates, who have studied only Marathi, must also possess proficiency in Konkani. In cases where Konkani has not been studied up to the 10th standard, the candidate’s proficiency shall be verified based on a certificate issued by the Goa Konkani Akademi or any other government authorised authority, as nominated by the state of Goa for the purpose.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant welcomed the recent recruitment advertisement issued by the central Postal Department for posts in Goa, adding that the advertisement clearly mentioned that Konkani language certificate has been made mandatory for selection to these posts in the state.
“This is an important step to ensure citizen-friendly public services in Goa’s local language, so that people can communicate comfortably and receive better service. The Goa government will continue working to safeguard Konkani and ensure fair, meaningful opportunities for Goa’s youth in public employment,” he said.
