Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review key reforms proposed for panchayats, with a focus on strengthening garbage management systems across the state.
Sawant said that panchayats are at the forefront of delivering basic civic services and must be equipped with better systems to manage waste effectively. “We need to push for scientific waste segregation, streamlined collection mechanisms, and stricter monitoring to ensure compliance at the village level,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho along with senior government officials. Discussions centred on improving the efficiency and accountability of local self-governance institutions in line with the government’s ‘Swachh Goem, Nitol Goem’ initiative.
Speaking about the importance of grassroots governance, Sawant said the government is committed to building people-centric institutions that respond efficiently to local issues. “Improving sanitation and waste management remains critical to enhancing the quality of life and preserving Goa’s environment,” he said.
The government is also considering measures to boost community participation in cleanliness drives and ensure greater transparency in panchayat functioning. Strengthening coordination between departments and local bodies was also discussed during the meeting.
