Fr Bernard Cota, diocesan priest, musician and composer known for his contribution to sacred and liturgical music in Goa, passed away. He was aged 80.
Fr Cota was widely
known for his simplicity
and dedication to priestly life. Most of his priesthood was spent serving in seminaries, where he worked as
a music professor and music director, particularly in
the fields of Western and sacred music.
Coming from a musically gifted family, Fr Cota developed a distinctive style of composing hymns and musical pieces that reflected the spirit and cultural flavour of Goa. His work included devotional hymns, liturgical compositions, concerts and folkloric songs.
He was also recognised for his expertise in musical arrangements, especially violin accompaniments for hymns and songs. Fr Cota contributed several hymns and arrangements to the Konkani Mass hymn book ‘Gãionacho Jhelo’ and composed a number of Goan folkloric pieces.
Fr Cota was regarded as one of the pioneers of
inculturation in sacred music for blending Western liturgical traditions with Goan cultural music to create a distinct local identity in church music.
He also composed several bhajan-style tunes for Konkani devotional hymns that became popular among the faithful.
Through his work in music and priestly ministry, Fr Bernard Cota leaves behind a lasting spiritual and cultural legacy in Goa’s sacred music tradition.
