The District and Sessions Court, North Goa, on April 9 granted conditional bail to Maibuba Yalagi (46), a native of Karnataka, who was arrested by Porvorim police in a counterfeit currency case.
Yalagi had allegedly deposited counterfeit seven Rs 500 notes through a cash deposit machine at a private sector bank branch in Porvorim. He was arrested on March 23.
Police had also attached counterfeit notes worth
Rs 3,16,500 allegedly hidden by the accused in a rented room near Audit Bhawan, Porvorim. Police opposed the bail, stating that the accused had revealed the involvement of another person who is yet to be traced and that machinery used to prepare the bogus notes was yet to be recovered.
The court said that the investigating officer’s claim regarding the involvement of other persons cannot be a ground to deny bail, especially when the accused has been in custody
since March 23. The court further said that the need to recover machinery used in preparing the counterfeit notes also cannot be a ground to refuse bail
According to police, an FIR was registered on March 20 based on a complaint filed by branch manager Vikas Jarial. Police said that on March 5, at Porvorim, the accused deposited seven fake Rs 500 notes of the same serial number in the cash deposit machine as genuine currency.
The amount was deposited into his account maintained at a private sector bank branch in Bagewadi, Karnataka.
