Panaji: In a boost to clean mobility in Goa, electric vehicles have regained popularity in the state after a slowdown in sales in 2025.
EV sales touched 7,323 vehicles in the first seven months of this year, compared to 9,301 e-vehicles sold during the entire year in 2025, according to Climate Dot, a research organisation that tracks EV adoption and the transition to clean energy in the transport sector.
Automobile dealers said the increase in EV sales this year has been driven by recent fuel price increases, improved charging infrastructure and the launch of new electric car and e-scooter models.
Dealers said some EV models are currently more popular than hybrids and, despite their higher upfront cost compared to conventional fuel-powered vehicles, are increasingly being considered viable options for the future.
EV penetration, however, remains low at 4.4 per cent of overall vehicle sales.
According to Climate Dot, of the 7,323 EVs sold this year, 5,892 were two-wheelers, mainly e-scooters, while 1,373 were electric cars, 28 were three-wheelers and the remaining vehicles comprised electric buses and commercial vehicles.
Petrol is currently priced at Rs 104 per litre and diesel at Rs 95.80 per litre, making the lower running costs of EVs attractive to some buyers. Automobile companies including Ola Electric, Ather Energy, Bajaj and Tata Motors have also expanded their EV portfolios.
Dealers said EV sales declined by 19 per cent in 2025 to 9,301 vehicles from 11,488 in 2024. They attributed the decline to market conditions, including fewer new model launches following changes to the FAME scheme and unchanged petrol and diesel prices.
“EVs are definitely environment friendly compared to petrol and diesel-powered cars. The running cost is low and there is less chance of a breakdown. The maintenance is trouble-free,” said a dealer.
