GRE seeks stricter rules to curb illegal fishing activities

Panaji: Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) has urged the state government to make amendments to the Goa, Daman and Diu Marine Fishing Regulation Act of 1980, mainly to combat illegal fishing activities effectively.

GRE on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Fisheries Department with their demands.

“We urge you to bring more stringent amendments to the Marine Fishing Regulation Act. Strengthening these regulations would provide the necessary framework to combat illegal fishing activities effectively. It is crucial to implement stricter penalties for those caught violating these laws and to enhance monitoring and enforcement capabilities to ensure compliance,” GRE said.

GRE has also urged the fisheries department to enhance monitoring and enforcement of the existing regulations.

“Some specific suggestions include increased surveillance by buying an additional 60 knots high speed FRP Interceptor craft with 24×7 crew members and installing a radar system which will help the department track and impound illegal fishing boats or rescue fishermen in distress,” it said.

GRE has also highlighted the need for stricter regulations on fish catch limits for purse-seiners and deep sea trawlers.

“The increasing pressure on marine resources due to large-scale commercial fishing has led to concerns over declining fish stocks and ecological imbalances. Many countries especially in Europe and Asia have implemented stringent regulations to ensure sustainable fishing practices. These include restrictions on total allowable catch, minimum fish sizes, seasonal quotas, and by catch reduction strategies. Adopting similar measures would help in preserving marine biodiversity and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry,” it said.
