The Deputy Collector (Revenue Section) at the South Goa Collectorate, Rohan Loliyenkar, on Tuesday directed the member secretaries of the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and the Goa State Pollution Control Board to urgently conduct a comprehensive site inspection of the entire ‘The Cape Goa’ resort at Cabo de Rama, Canacona, which was sealed a few days ago.
The establishment was sealed following directions of the government-constituted Joint Enforcement and Monitoring Committee, and further action, including demolition, has been proposed.
Loliyenkar also wrote to the Director of Tourism, drawing attention to an allegedly unauthorised extension at ‘The Cape Goa’ resort that is said to encroach upon land belonging to the Tourism Department.
“The Enforcement and Monitoring Committee noted significant violations during their inspection of the resort, including violations pertaining to the CRZ notification and the Environment (Protection) Act, as it is engaged in unauthorised and illegal activities within the NDZ and CRZ zones,” Loliyenkar said in the order.
He said it is imperative to initiate urgent measures, including but not limited to demolition and the removal of the illegal structure.
“The authorities demanded the restoration of the land to its original state. The recovery of environmental compensation and damages was also mentioned. Given the irreversible nature of environmental degradation in CRZ areas, this matter necessitates immediate and time-bound intervention by the authority exercising its powers,” the order further said.
Loliyenkar also asked the Director of Tourism to verify whether any structures have encroached upon land belonging to the Tourism Department and if identified, they must be demolished without delay.
