SGDH launches dedicated unit with 30 procedures

Margao: The South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) on Tuesday inaugurated a dedicated state-of-the-art panchakarma centre offering 30 procedures with trained personnel to promote awareness and provide access to the traditional Indian system of medicine.

“Panchakarma treatment is the vision of the Prime Minister. It is a system of Indian medicine, and there is a need for awareness about it. There is also a need for it to be integrated with the regular system of medicine. We have taken the step at SGDH, and I have given directions to expand it and create a larger setup with more dedicated space for male and female patients,” said Health Minister Vishwajit Rane.

He said that panchakarma addresses a range of issues, from digestion to overall wellness, and that the practice has been followed for years. He also directed the deployment of additional staff for the centre.

SGDH medical superintendent Dr Rajendra Borkar said, “The treatment is very scientific and provided by trained personnel. The only constraint we have is space, but we are working on addressing this as well.”

The SGDH already has ayurvedic and homeopathic OPDs, and the new centre will function as part of the Ayurveda OPD. Initially launched in February 2023 with several pain-relief therapies and a team of two consultants and one therapist, the unit has been upgraded in response growing demand from OPD patients.

“With increasing awareness and demand for panchakarma procedures, we decided to upgrade the unit last year. It now consists of two fully equipped procedure rooms with independent kitchen facilities for male and female patients. The speciality is that it is a spacious and innovative centre among all the DHS facilities,” said Dr Supriya Dhond.

‘Efforts under way to improve SGDH services’

Margao: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday said efforts are underway to introduce more medical interventions at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) while also addressing the issue of staff shortage.

Speaking to mediapersons at the sidelines of his visit to the SGDH, Rane said, “We have not sorted out the staff shortage issue yet, but I am working on it. Our goal is to establish a centre of excellence. We need specialists in orthopaedics and neurology, and we are improving emergency services to reduce the number of patient transfers from SGDH to GMC. Additionally, we plan to introduce cardiac care, including angiography and angioplasty, and enhance ICU interventions,” he said.

Additionally, efforts are being made to establish an Early Detection and Paediatric Neuro Rehab Centre (PNRC) at SGDH to identify anomalies in newborns and ensure timely intervention.
