Sankhali: Goa Police, with assistance from Maharashtra Police, arrested a 34-year-old man accused of murdering a 58-year-old woman in Kudnem, Sankhali, following a multi-city manhunt across Maharashtra.

The accused is being brought to Goa for further investigation after completion of legal formalities, said Goa police.

Police stated that the accused, Sagar Ramesh Rawool, a resident of Malaiwadi, Shirshinge in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, was apprehended on Wednesday in Thane district. The accused was arrested at 5.30 pm at Kashigaon police station and was later produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mira-Bhayandar, Thane, on Thursday for transit remand.

The victim Shaila Ghadia, a resident of Chiknem, was found dead inside her residence on Tuesday.

The accused had contacted the victim’s elder daughter over the phone, confessed to the murder and threatened to kill her and other family members. The victim’s son, Shubham, told police that the accused had murdered his mother over a personal grudge. Police said that the accused was allegedly upset after his marriage proposal

to the victim’s younger daughter was rejected. After the crime, the accused fled the scene after stealing a gold chain and the victim’s cellphone.

Following the crime an investigation was launched under PI Vijay Rane Sardesai of Bicholim Police Station. Special teams led by PSI Viraj Dhauskar and PSI Akash Parwar conducted operations across Sawantwadi, Kolhapur and Mumbai to trace the accused.

Using technical surveillance and intelligence inputs from Crime Branch Unit IV of the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate in Maharashtra, investigators tracked the accused to Thane district.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of SDPO Bicholim Shridevi B V and SP (North Goa) Barish Madkaikar.
