The Judicial Magistrate First Class Court, Mapusa, on Saturday acquitted former deputy chief minister and Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president Dayanand Narvekar and his wife Sushma in a case of alleged forgery of their son’s birth certificate to make him eligible for the Under-15 cricket level.

In her order, Judicial Magistrate First Class Puja U S Sardessai stated that, under Section 248(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, both accused were acquitted of offences punishable under Sections 465, 468, 471 read with Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code.

The court directed that the bail bonds and sureties furnished by the accused would stand cancelled after the appeal period. The accused were directed to execute a bond of Rs 5,000 each under Section 437-A of the Criminal Procedure Code to appear before a higher court, if required, within six months. The case was based on an FIR filed by Mapusa police following a complaint by former GCA executive member Dr Shekhar Salkar. The complaint alleged that Narvekar’s son, Ganeshraj, played during third year also  for Under-15 level by changing his name and birth certificate, in violation of BCCI rules which permit only two years in
