The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has once again turned to innovative experiments in its long-standing struggle to manage solid waste at Sonsoddo. In its latest move, the council on Friday resolved to grant consent to Uswatun Hasanah Foundation to install a one tonne per day (TPD) garbage terminator machine with an exhaust smoke eliminating device, a waste treatment plant, at the site.

The installation will be on a trial basis under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, allowing municipal officials to observe operations and assess its feasibility before committing to larger investments. The agency itself placed the proposal before the municipality to install the unit.

“The objective of this initiative is to strengthen the existing municipal waste management by introducing a decentralised, eco-friendly and pollution-controlled waste processing solution. MMC does not have to put in any funds. We will only provide a piece of land measuring 250 sqm to the agency on a temporary basis,” municipal engineer Deepak Desai said.

Responding to a councillor’s question on the plant, Desai said that the proposed system is designed to process mixed municipal waste in a closed and controlled environment and is equipped with an integrated exhaust smoke eliminating mechanism to ensure minimal emissions and compliance with environmental norms. However, the move reflects the council’s trial-and-error approach that has characterised waste management efforts at Sonsoddo for years. Despite multiple attempts and the introduction of various waste treatment technologies, lasting solutions have remained elusive.
