Panaji: Describing Mario de Miranda as an artist with a unique ability to observe life closely and transform it into art that made people smile, Nuvem MLA and Goa Law Commission chairman Aleixo Sequeira said that Miranda taught that art does not always have to be serious, but can be joyful, observant and deeply human.

“When one thinks of Mario, one is forced to imagine a world where even the busiest street, the noisiest market or the most ordinary day is filled with humour, life and storytelling, and I think this is the magical world of Mario,” he said.

Sequeira was addressing a gathering at a city function organised to mark the conclusion of the birth centenary year of the iconic cartoonist.

The Consul General of Portugal in Goa, Maria Manuela de Macedo Franco; Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Goa Division, Anurag

Nikhare; and Miranda’s family members were present. An exhibition of his works from the collection of Aristides Alvares was inaugurated.

Sequeira said that Mario’s cartoons were not just drawings but lively scenes filled with characters that seemed to come alive. “From workers rushing through their day to gossiping neighbours to crowded city streets, every detail in his works told a story,” he said, adding that what made Miranda’s work special was his rich, energetic style.

He said that each viewing of his artwork revealed something new — a tiny expression, a hidden joke or subtle social commentary.

The Department of Posts released a special cancellation and picture postcard on Mario during the event.

Nikhare said that Mario brought everyday life to people with remarkable wit. “The Department of Posts promotes, preserves and commemorates cultural heritage as well as personalities through philately,” he said.

A documentary on Mario was screened, and Goan Fado singer Sonia Shirsat presented a few songs.
