Agitating villagers of Mirabag on Friday morning gheraoed WRD assistant engineer Shantaram Gaonkar at his office in Pajimol, Sanguem, demanding a written assurance on when a dangerous open pit dug up for the bandhara work would be filled.

The villagers said they did not want verbal assurances but a written commitment specifying when the pit would be filled. They warned that they would not leave the office until they received it.

Gaonkar, after consultations, issued a letter to the protestors stating that the filling of the pit would commence from March 2 onwards.

“This was our demand we were making since last one year. Now our main demand is to scrap the project of bandhara and our agitation will continue till said demand is fulfilled,” said one of the leaders of the protest, Sanket
Bhandari.

Another leader of the protest, Upendra Naik, said the stagnant water had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and posed a threat to villagers’ lives.

“Now our second target is demanding to stop the construction of the bandhara. We will make all efforts besides agitation to stage dharna agitation in front of the residences of concerned MLAs and ministers,” he said.
