Stressing the need to preserve adivasi culture while leveraging Sanguem’s natural resources for tourism and development, Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said the government is contemplating doubling financial assistance to organisations working for the development of different communities.

He was speaking after inaugurating the three-day Adivasi Mahotsav at PM Shri Government High School ground, Vadem in Sanguem.

He said Adivasi Mahotsavs are of utmost importance as they help preserve tribal culture, including traditional art forms, sports, folk dances, attire and food.

“With the growing influence of western culture and changing lifestyles, adivasi culture is gradually disappearing, and such festivals play a crucial role in safeguarding it,” said Tawadkar, adding that these platforms also allow youth to showcase their hidden talents and abilities.

He said the government plans to double financial assistance currently provided by the Tribal Department, which stands at Rs 5 lakh, in the near future.

He said similar financial assistance extended by the Departments of Art and Culture and Youth Affairs will also be doubled.

“Additionally, around 20 villages in the state will receive financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for traditional Shigmo organisations to purchase musical instruments such as dhol and tashe, along with dresses and other items required for celebrations,” said Tawadkar.

Highlighting Sanguem’s tourism potential, Tawadkar said several states have successfully developed tourism by utilising their natural resources, and Sanguem taluka too has an abundance of such assets. He said the taluka has waterfalls, a dam, scenic beauty, temples and various plantations. He appealed to people to remain united so that they can collectively face challenges.

Sanguem MLA and Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai appreciated the organising team led by Suhas Deikar.

Goa Tourism Development Corporation Chairman and Saligao MLA Kedar Naik said the festival is not merely a celebration but also a platform for youth of the community to display their talents in art, culture and sports.

“Such programmes help instil togetherness and strengthen the sense of community, he said.

The festival is being organised by the Sanguem Adivasi Sports and Cultural Club in association with Chaurasmaya Yuva Sports and Cultural Club, Jalmi Mahaya Sports and Cultural Club, and the Department of Art and Culture.
