Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has alleged that the BJP government has failed to stop the supply of drugs in the state and demanded registration of an FIR against the management of the BITS Pilani Goa campus in connection with the death of a student on September 4.

“With the Randox test results confirming the presence of narcotics and sedatives like ecstasy, MDMA, and amphetamines in samples from the student of BITS Pilani Goa campus who was found dead in his hostel room, police should investigate this case thoroughly,” Alemao said.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. “This is not a tragedy; it’s criminal negligence. Goa has become a drug capital under the BJP rule—from beaches to campuses, our youth are being destroyed. Congress demands judicial inquiry and accountability,”
he alleged.

Alemao said that in the past 18 months this is the sixth case of death in this institute and alleged that police concealed one case of death that happened in February 2024.

“We cannot allow our students to succumb to such deaths. This is indeed a complete failure of the police, who are unable to halt the supply of drugs, even in educational
campuses,” he said.

According to Alemao, management of the institute should also be held accountable if they failed to implement preventive measures.

“I have been told that there was no proper CCTV surveillance in the institute. There is no proper monitoring of the activities of the students. Management seems to have taken these cases very lightly. They should be booked,” Alemao said, adding that they have been warning that drugs have infiltrated educational institutions. “But the government is often preoccupied with narrating stories of crime detection. There is a supply of drugs in the vicinity of this institute, but police have failed to stop this menace.”
