Panaji: A 22-year-old Kerala native, who was declared brain dead at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim gave a new lease of life to three patients by donating his kidneys and liver.

The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) allocated the kidneys to 33-year-old and 34-year-old male recipients at GMC and the liver was allocated by Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) West to MGM Hospital, Aurangabad.

The 22-year-old, working as ground staff at Mopa Airport, had met with a road accident and despite receiving the best medical treatment at GMC, he was declared brain dead.

The brain stem death certification was performed by Dr Sanat Bhatkar, Assistant Professor at Department of Neurology, GMC and Dr Marina Vaz, Assistant Professor at General Medicine, GMC. A green corridor was arranged by SOTTO Goa, with the help of Goa Traffic Police Cell, to transport the liver from GMC to Dabolim Airport. GMC Dean has arranged for the mortal remains of the organ donor to be transported to his native village in Kerala for final rites.

This marks the eighth organ donation under the umbrella of SOTTO Goa. SOTTO has allocated 16 kidneys and facilitated allocation of four hearts, seven liver and two lungs through ROTTO West and NOTTO since its inception in 2019.
