Pernem

A public meeting has been scheduled on February 1 at Dhargal in Pernem to protest against the proposed Formula 4 street racing event near Manohar International Airport at Mopa. Uday Mahale, activist and resident of Casarvarnem and convenor of the meeting, said the event goes beyond the airport’s intended aviation use.

“Despite the agreement to use Mopa airport exclusively for aviation, efforts are underway to host the Formula 4 car racing event. This violates Supreme Court directives and amounts to contempt of court. While the company seeks political support, the local people are bearing the brunt,” Mahale said. He added that land losers continue to suffer, taxi operators face difficulties, and airport workers are being exploited, all amid environmental
degradation.

Mahale highlighted that land was acquired from locals with promises of jobs and business opportunities, but residents are now confronting environmental damage, including the destruction of natural springs and medicinal plants. He said such events would strain road infrastructure, increase traffic congestion and raise the risk
of accidents.

Urging residents not to remain silent, Mahale appealed to the people of Pernem to attend the meeting and protest, saying it was time to fight for their rights and prevent activities that are against local interests.
